What a week for the Vancouver Ski Team. The VSTs were in Lake Louise all week and Gavin’s group brought back some hardware from the Alberta Rockies. Coach Gavin was enthused by the results “The girls put on a show Thursday and Friday each taking turns winning the first run and coming away with silver (Nicole Mah) and bronze (Frances McDonald) in the overall.” Christian Callaghan just missed the podium by .01 seconds on the boys side finishing 4th for U19. The Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club is pleased to welcome Mike Janyk for this coming season in the role of Performance Director. Both Mike and the Tyee Alpine Committee see his focus as being on improving the athlete, coaching and club environment through education.
Canada’s top alpine and ski cross athletes will gather at Vancouver’s Blue Water Café for the 11th annual Peak to Peak Gala, Wednesday November 2, 2016. The evening is organized by BC Alpine to raise funds for training facilities, coaching and safety equipment for provincial and national ski programs.
Skiing on Blackcomb Glacier has wrapped up for the season and this year it wasn’t for lack of snow like last year. Conditions were absolutely ideal especially in the 2nd week. All of the coaches working with our athletes couldn’t say enough about the setup and the progression of the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club racers.
Most people on the West Coast have shed their winter clothes in favour of T-shirts and shorts, but some Grouse Tyee athletes and their coaches managed to squeeze in one more training session on the slopes of Blackcomb Mountain.
Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club’s Sam Mulligan, a current member of the BC Ski Team, has just been named to the National Development Team. Fellow Tyee and VST racer Kristina Natalenko has been named to the BC Ski Team Summer/Fall Training Group.
The Vancouver Ski Team (VST) alpine committee is pleased to present the 2016/17 VST program and coaching staff. The new VST program will focus on developing potential for a broad range of athletes recognizing their individual goals at the U18/FIS level, while at the same time providing a pathway for athletes to achieve provincial, national, and international success.
Grouse Tyee’s Christian Callagan had another great series of races at this past weekend’s Fidelity Investments U16 Western CanAms. He earned two podium slots, finishing third in the GS and slalom events.
What a weekend for Grouse Tyee’s U16 squad at the Teck Open Series Final event on Grouse Mountain this past weekend. They skied fast on a very steep course set on The Peak, and held on. Tyees ended up earning several top-10 finishes, with standout performances by Christian Callaghan, who tool gold on the opening race of the three-day slalom “derby” event, and Lucia Plunkett, who raced her way to three top-10 finishes.
Grouse Tyee’s own Vancouver Ski Team (VST) athletes were in top form at last week’s Fidelity BC Cup event at Red Mountain. Nicole Mah, Frances MacDonald and Kristina Natalenko all posted top-10 finishes and stepped onto the U18 podium several times.
